NIN/JA 2009, KCMO

On a night that I should be exhausted due to yesterday's travel and Guinness the cat's meowing demand for attention all night as a result of our abandoning her for our vacation, I find myself wide awake, still pumped from attending one of the best concerts I have seen in a long time.
Nine Inch Nails was very good. They played a lot of songs in the middle that I was not familiar with, which resulted in a bit of a lull for me. The energy was there and some of the songs were still really good, but I wish I had found the time to listen to the new album a few more times before the concert. (The new album, by the way, can be downloaded free at the NIN website.)
The songs they played that I knew, though, were awesome. Hurt and Head Like a Hole made for the perfect encore.
As much as I enjoyed NIN, Jane's Addiction was better (though Molly is more of a NIN fan and disagrees with me.)
Three Days was an awesome opener and really set the tone. To me they really played great as a band and the music ruled the show - not Perry Farrell. Their two biggest hits - Been Caught Stealing and Jane Says - were actually disappointing compared to how good the rest of the show was. They closed with a pretty lame pseudo-acoustic version of Jane Says. But Ocean Size was awesome and Mountain Song was as good as any song I have ever heard live.
Farrell fell during Summertime Roll but, after signing for a few minutes while still on the floor, he got up and finished the show. From the beginning of the show he seemed less physically active than when I saw them in Albuquerque in the early nineties, but he still exuded a lot of energy and picked it up toward the end. And I was glad that reality TV and being married to Carmen Elektra hadn't depleted Dave Navarro's ability to play.
The crowd was friendly, happy and diverse. Though many of the people there were younger than I, I still felt you being there and enjoying it as much as I did.
