U.S. Air Guitar Regional Championships, Kansas City

Last night Molly and I took a rare late weeknight outing to a bar to see the U.S. Air Guitar Regional Championships at the Record Bar. It was well worth being tired today. The contest was hosted by Bjork Turoque, the sore loser from the air guitar documentary “Air Guitar Nation” (highly recommeneded!) and last year’s Air Guitar World Champion Hot Licks Hulahan.
Molly and I made it through the first round of 15 to 20 air guitarists performing to the song of their choice. Performances ranged from very good to people who were obviously just drunk and looking for attention. I found myself tending to root for folks that performed to songs I like instead of the standard hair band songs, even if the performances weren’t as good. It was cool to hear The Cult’s “She Sells Sanctuary” and Jane’s Addiction’s “Stop”, even though one judge berated the latter as a poor song choice. Some performances were more entertaining than good, like the guy who did a sedated but hilarious “stoner” guitarist.
We didn’t hang around for the second round that took the best five from the first round and made them all perform to the same song that none of them knew. But we did read in the Pitch today that our favorite performer from the first round, Mean Melvin, was the winner. He heads to D.C. for the Nationals and a chance to go to Europe for the Worlds.
